Introducing the LEAF Award

The Lamorinda community is filled with proactive students who care about where they live and the environment they create. Through the years, Sustainable Lafayette has advocated for the students through several projects, including No Idling and adding water bottle filling stations at the Moraga Commons Skate Park. This year will be no different as we look to inspire our community to act and advocate for environmental health and justice.

To get started, the Sustainable Lafayette Board of Directors revamped the LEAF Award. We were inspired by a local Lafayette middle school student who contacted us about her own initiative to reduce plastic waste by distributing reusable produce bags at the Moraga Farmers’ Market. We figured there must be other students with sustainability ideas who might need a little kick start.

LEAF Award

To get 2021 off to the best start possible, Sustainable Lafayette is very happy to announce the Lamorinda Environmental Action Fellowship (LEAF) -- a $1,000 award available to Lamorinda middle and high school students with sustainable and environmentally impactful ideas that will benefit the community.

LEAF Goals

There are three main goals for LEAF:

  • Students are given an opportunity to bring their ideas to life as the next generation of environmental stewards.

  • The Lamorinda community inherits new ideas to make environmentally conscious choices.

  • Enrich the relationship between Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda by broadening the opportunity for deeper engagement within the overall community.

LEAF Eligibility

To be eligible, you must be a middle or high school student in either Lafayette, Moraga or Orinda (proof of residency required) with an idea for a project that meets the evaluation criteria.

LEAF Evaluation Criteria

While thinking of your project, keep these three ideas at the forefront:

  • How will my project impact the environment?

  • How will my project achieve environmental goals?

  • How will my project inspire others in the community? Can it be replicated?

LEAF Application

The first step is to fill out a short application here. Each application will be reviewed by the Board and you might be invited to present at the following Sustainable Lafayette board meeting (meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month).

The Sustainable Lafayette Board of Directors will vote on each valid application. All voting results will be final and at the discretion of the Board.

LEAF Award Recipients

Winners will be asked to execute their idea over the course of one year or longer and must follow up with Sustainable Lafayette within 6 months to demonstrate progress against the award.

If you have a winning idea, please fill out your application today!
