The Springhill Garden encompasses a spacious area behind Springhill elementary, bordering the open landscape of Briones park. The garden is known as a place for students to dig with shovels and plant new seeds; but it’s becoming much more than that thanks to a new initiative currently underway. Over the upcoming school year, the Springhill Garden is posed to become a ‘sustainable, thriving solution for the betterment of the community through education and hands-on workshops.’ So, what does that mean? Basically, it means that a group of volunteers with professional environmental expertise, local businesses, and parent volunteers are coming together to turn the Springhill Garden into a model that other schools and communities can follow so that they too can build a beautiful garden with bountiful yields.
Led by Heidi Doggett and Jessica Chandler, the Springhill Garden renovation project is already gaining notice. The project received a nomination for a Leadership in Sustainability Award from Sustainable Contra Costa. This year’s event theme is “Stories of Sustainability” and the winners will be announced later this summer. To help Springhill bring home the gold, we’ll need help from parents and students alike. To get started, the community is hosting a “Clean Up & Ice Cream Social” this Saturday from 9am to noon.

As you know, running a fabulous garden takes a lot of work, but with an awesome community like this one (and tons of helping hands) we can get things ready for the season in no time. Grab the family and come on down to the Springhill Elementary School Garden to get the garden ready for the school year!
We will be putting in a new rodent resistant floor for our greenhouse and doing some clean up around the entire garden to get ready for the fun we have planned this year. We need your help to be sure the garden is ready by the time school starts. All ages and abilities are encouraged to participate, no gardening experience necessary.
The more the merrier so please feel free to invite your friends, family, neighbors, etc.
Please use Sign Up Genius so that we can plan accordingly.
