Save the Date - Sustainable Sunday - September 15

Sustainable Sunday is our annual fundraiser that enables us to enhance and expand our community outreach activities, reaching thousands of Lamorinda residents. This year we’re adding more support for Lafayette elementary, middle, and high school students to complete projects geared towards sustaining the environment and making our community an even better place to live. You won’t want to miss this years’ event featuring TED talks—local speakers will share their experiences in starting a farm-to-table restaurant business; green building concepts for your home; and protecting our Bay Area shoreline—there will be appetizers, beverages, music and a silent auction.

Join us Sunday, September 15 from 3:30 to 6pm at the Lafayette Community Center

Sustainable Sunday Speakers

Our 2019 event theme, Think Global, Act Local, is aimed to transform concerns over the global climate crisis into meaningful local action. The event currently features three influential speakers who will provide brief TED-style talks about sustainable living.

Erica Welton, The Organic Coup, Founder: Erica opened America’s first USDA Certified Organic Fast Food Restaurant in November 2015. Erica’s journey into organic food began as a Whole Foods customer, her passion grew as she became a mom, and then it became part of her career at Costco Wholesale as a food buyer.

Larry Goldzband, BCDC, Executive Director: Larry was a volunteer San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commissioner for about 10 years prior to becoming the BCDC Executive Director in 2012. Prior, Larry was a Coro Foundation Fellow, worked for members of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate in Washington, D.C., was Chief Deputy Cabinet Secretary for former California Governor Pete Wilson, and was Director of the California Department of Conservation.

Jim Coyle, Equity Community Builders, Construction Manager: For two decades, Jim has demonstrated a commitment to responsibly developing buildings and creating great places that contribute to the vitality of neighborhoods and help strengthen communities. Jim has a deep interest in construction and sustainability with added experience in residential and infrastructure development.

Silent Auction

By attending Sustainable Sunday, you can help Sustainable Lafayette achieve our goal of engaging local students who are creating sustainable choices for the health of our planet. This past year, we supported many inspiring youth-led community improvement projects, including:

  • Girl Scouts planting a monarch butterfly garden at Lafayette Elementary

  • A 5th grader’s project to ban single-use plastics at Burton Valley Elementary

  • 3rd grade students educating adults to stop idling their cars at Burton Valley

  • A high school sophomore’s project to add a water bottle refilling station to the local skate park in Moraga (read more on the Moraga Skate Park Upgrades)

All silent auction bids are treated as donations to Sustainable Lafayette, which in turn are used to help youth-oriented sustainability projects in Lafayette. Here’s a quick sample of items to bid on:

  • Oakland Zoo tickets

  • Family guest pass for the Lawrence Hall of Honor

  • Four admission tickets to the Legion of Honor

  • Town Hall Theater - two season subscriptions

  • Diablo Rock Gym passes

  • Planted Table meals gift certificate

  • A wine tasting event at a local art gallery for 10-12 people

  • Ten pack of yoga classes

  • Environmentally safe beauty products

  • And so much more!

Come for the Speakers, Stay for the Food

In addition to the speakers and the silent auction, there will be plenty of food, drink and live music. We’d especially like to thank Diablo Foods, Metro and Pan Coast Pizza for supporting this event.

We look forward to seeing you on September 15 from 3:30 to 6pm at the Lafayette Community Center!
